To begin, the parent-teacher conference can be held on the phone or in person and should be scheduled in advance to meet the needs of all parties. It is advised that more than one staff member attend if possible. Also, teachers need to be informed of who and how many people will attend. In sensitive cases, parents bring lawyers and advocates and may even record the meeting. The teacher needs to know in advance so that he or she can also have additional staff and recorders available. The meeting needs to begin on time and end at an expected time. I would ask the parents in advance what would they like to discuss and if I called the conference I would have an addenda to share with the families at the meeting. A sign in sheet is a good method to keep track of the parent communication and attempts to work with the family in case issues arise at a later date.
