Conformity is defined as a change in behavior that results from real or perceived group pressure. Obedience can be defined as dutiful or submissive compliance. Obedience is an extreme form of conformity, often involving going against one’s better judgement or truest intentions. Both conformity and obedience can involve doing something as a result of some real pressure. Factors that increase obedience include:
Proximity and legitimacy of the authority: When the authority figure is close by, obedience is more likely. The authority has to be seen as legitimate. Individuals are more likely to obey an individual perceived as having real authority.
Institutional authority: When an authority figure is seen as part of an accepted institution (example: police officers, judges, school personnel) obedience is more likely.
